My Soulful Journey with Photography
Photography is more than just capturing images
You know, I’ve been in love with photography for as long as I can remember. My earliest memory? It wasn’t from a fancy camera or a breathtaking scene. It was stumbling upon my sister’s negatives. She’s a good 16 years older than me and was deep into a photography course at the time. I can’t even recall how old I was, but I remember holding those little plastic strips of inverted images and just being completely mesmerized. It’s funny how some memories stick, isn’t it?
My love affair with photography began back in middle school. Yep, I was that kid snapping shots for the yearbook, and I carried that passion into high school and even college. But after that? Life happened, and my camera took a little break. It wasn’t until the magic of digital photography came around that I felt that old spark again and just had to dive back in!
You know how it goes. I followed the advice of all those so-called photography experts, devoured book after book, and even started my own commercial photography business because, well, that’s what you’re supposed to do, right? And oh boy, it was a blast at first! I had fun, saw incredible places, met fantastic people… but something just wasn’t quite right. I found myself burnt out and realized that the joy had slipped away. I had to take a step back and think about what photography truly meant to me.
I found myself longing to reconnect with that initial magic, the pure joy and mystery I felt when I first picked up a camera lens. I yearned for a way back to the contentment and tranquility that photography once brought me, that sense of peace within. It was like an old friend calling me back, and I knew I had to find that path again.
I hopped into different photography groups and clubs, all of which were great in their own way. But deep down, I was seeking something more profound than just technical expertise. I yearned for conversations that went beyond the ‘look what I can do’ and touched the soul of the art.
I couldn’t quite find what I was after, so I delved into some book recommendations that came my way: ‘Artist Way’, ‘On Becoming an Artist’, ‘The Zen of Creativity‘, and quite a few others. As I immersed myself in these insightful reads on the artistic side of photography, a thought struck me. Maybe the answers I was seeking weren’t out there, but within me. Perhaps it was time to look inward rather than searching externally.
I’m still on this intriguing journey, piecing things together bit by bit. What’s becoming clear to me, though, is this beautiful notion: Photography isn’t just about capturing images; it’s a gateway to discovering your true spirit. And I’m slowly, but surely, chipping away at this idea, uncovering what it means to me.
Looking around at the hustle and bustle of our world, I can’t help but feel that we’re all searching for a bit of inner peace. Don’t you think? It’s like we’re all craving those quiet moments of stillness in our otherwise non-stop lives, seeking little pockets of tranquility amid life’s chaos. We’re not trying to run away from reality, far from it. Instead, we’re looking to engage with it on a deeper level, stripping away the distractions and pressures, and finding that sweet spot of balance and emotional calm. It’s a journey, and it’s one that I think many of us are on together.
If any of this rings true for you, if you’re not just seeking fleeting moments of calm but are on a real journey towards lasting well-being, contentment, and all-around happiness, then we’re on the same path. I’d absolutely love to hear from you, to share insights and experiences. Maybe we can help each other along the way!
