The Importance of Awareness
Noticing What’s Right in Front of You
Awareness is a choice. It’s about being present, questioning what we see, and being willing to face the truths that might be uncomfortable. By cultivating this awareness, we can move through life with greater clarity, understanding, and connection to the world around us.

Seeing What’s Right in Front of Us: A Lesson in Awareness
There are moments in life that shake us out of our routines and force us to see the world differently. One of those moments happened to me on an ordinary day in North Carolina, when I was out doing something as mundane as grocery shopping. It was a day marked by severe weather—a storm so intense that the sky seemed to be falling apart.
As I left the store, the downpour was relentless, with thunder and lightning cutting through the air. But what struck me most was the debris raining down from the sky. Not just small pieces, but large chunks of plywood and huge swaths of insulation, tumbling through the air like confetti. It was surreal, almost apocalyptic, and there was no way you could miss it. Or so I thought.
I stopped under the store’s canopy, captivated and a bit concerned by the sight happening before me. As I stood there, a woman walked out of the store behind me. I couldn’t help but point out what was happening, expecting her to share my amazement. But to my surprise, she just kept walking, unfazed, and replied, “See what?” She didn’t even glance up. She walked right into the parking lot, where debris was falling just feet away from her.
How could she not notice? How could anyone miss something so obvious, so alarming? At that moment, I realized something profound about awareness, or rather, the lack of it. This wasn’t just about one woman’s obliviousness to her surroundings; it was a wake-up call for me. If someone could miss something as massive as this, what else might we all be missing in our lives?
The Nature of Awareness
This experience made me question the nature of awareness. Are most people really so blind to what’s going on around them? Or is it something deeper—perhaps a kind of denial or cognitive dissonance that keeps us from seeing things we don’t want to acknowledge? This event sparked a shift in my perspective, making me more aware of the things I might be overlooking in my own life.
We often go through life on autopilot, missing the signs and signals that could help us navigate more effectively. It’s easy to get caught up in our routines, focusing on the immediate tasks at hand, and miss the bigger picture. But that day, I started asking myself more questions: What am I not seeing? What beliefs or ideas am I holding onto that might not be serving me? This was the beginning of a deeper inquiry into myself, one that I believe many people avoid because it’s uncomfortable to confront.
As it turned out, a tornado had touched down just a few miles away, destroying several buildings. The debris that fell from the sky was from those structures. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the event left a lasting impression on me. It was a stark reminder that awareness isn’t just about seeing with our eyes; it’s about being open to the reality of our surroundings and the truths that lie just beneath the surface.
Visual Intervention
The photograph attached to this post serves as a powerful visual anchor for this experience. It’s an image of a serene mountain landscape bathed in soft light. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. The light symbolizes awareness—the ability to see and understand what’s happening around us. The mountains, solid and unmovable, represent the truths that are always present, whether we choose to see them or not. The mist and clouds drifting through the scene reflect the illusions and distractions that can obscure our vision, much like the cognitive dissonance that keeps us from recognizing what’s right in front of us.
This image is a reminder that while life can be calm and beautiful, there are always deeper layers waiting to be uncovered. It challenges us to look beyond the surface, to question what we think we know, and to stay open to the unexpected.
Reflections
- Have you ever had a moment when something significant was happening around you, but you didn’t notice until later? What was that experience like?
- How often do you go through life on autopilot, and what might you be missing because of it?
- What beliefs or ideas are you holding onto that might no longer be serving you? How can you begin to question and explore them?
- How do you respond when confronted with something unexpected or unsettling? Do you ignore it, or do you take the time to understand it?
- How can you cultivate greater awareness in your daily life, both of your surroundings and your inner world?
- What does the light in the photograph symbolize for you? How can you use this symbolism to inspire greater mindfulness in your life?
- In what ways can you challenge yourself to see beyond the surface, to uncover the deeper truths that may be hidden from view?
